Common Hedgehog Cage Selection Mistakes

Prior to you making or purchase your hedgehog cage, make sure you do not result in the following mistakes:

Having an aquarium. Many first time hedgehog owners think that glass aquariums make perfectly safe cages for hedgehogs. It’s not the truth. Aquariums lack proper ventilation under normal conditions and so are notorious for collecting excess moisture and odor. Aquariums may also become literal ovens each time a atomizer is added placing the duration of your hedgehog at an increased risk. There are several other cage styles which can be equally as cheap as as well as much easier to maintain than aquariums, so do not risk the fitness of your hedgehog to save time and money!

Wire cage floors. To be safe, a hedgehog cage mustn’t possess a wire floor. Unlike larger animals for example rabbits, hedgehogs have tiny feet and legs, which makes it very easy on your hedgie to fall partially through while moving. While falling through may seem harmless, this may actually result in very serious injuries like broken limbs.

One other reason to stop wire floors in hedgehog cages is because they might be too rough on sensitive feet. Many people do not understand that foot troubles are incredibly common among hedgehogs. Hedgehogs have delicate feet and toes which can be easily injured and sometimes become infected. Instead, avoid these health problems altogether by selecting a better living environment to your hedgehog.

Using wood. Wood is not an excellent material for the hedgehog cage in that it could absorb urine and grow quite stinky. Contain ramps or shelves that a hedgehog can disappear of.

The only real safe ramps and ledges are the ones with a solid railing which a hedgehog cannot fall through. Many people believe because animals like hedgehogs are very small which they can’t be easily hurt inside a fall. This is not true. Serious injuries can take place even during falls from short distances.

Doesn’t need a dog proof top if you have other pets. Usually do not assume that other pets won’t gain access to off limit areas! When you have a cat or dog which could gain access to your hedgehog cage, be sure to offer an animal proof top in position! Wire screens with wooden frames which can be secured are very effective. If employing a sterilte tub as being a cage, you can even use a matching lid so long as you cut lots of air holes.
