‘Here to help you with all of your health and safety needs’

I am delighted to have joined the c’s at Acorn Safety Services at such an interesting time. Acorn has strong ambitions for the future, specially around its legionella microorganisms services, and I can’t wait around to be part of it.

I’ve put in many years working in the river industry, in domestic plumbing and remedials and more recently gaining valuable knowledge carrying out legionella risk assessments.

I’ve already been on the road assembly our clients face-to-face, and I’m really looking forward to creating these important relationships.
‘What is legionella bacteria along with am I at risk?’

Legionella germs is microscopic and can be found in streams, rivers, reservoirs and ponds, usually in very low numbers, where they will don’t cause any difficulties. The difficulty comes in case these tiny bacteria get trapped with your water system and also multiply, potentially bringing about Legionnaires’ Disease.

According to the Govt, there were 503 cases of Legionnaires’ Disease in the UK in 2019. It’s a critical illness which can be fatal – symptoms to be familiar with include fever, headache, cough and difficulty breathing.

While legionella bacteria can cause problems anywhere given the right conditions, some areas such as locations where water is stored or recirculated, where the water temperature is in between 20-45°C or where corrosion, sludge, scale and organic matters are present, are considered to be at much higher risk.

Those who are more susceptible to an infection, including the elderly the ones with weakened natureal defenses, need to be especially watchful.
‘So, what can I do to protect myself and those close to me?’

Employers, your self-employed, facilities managers, health and safety officers and land lords, are all among those who’ve a duty to protect men and women against the risks related to legionella bacteria.

The rules around legionella bacteria are really complex and testing needs to be carried out by an expert – this is where Acorn Safety Companies can really help.

A full Legionella Danger Assessment carried out by one of our qualified assessors is the initial important step in figuring out and assessing your own personal risk.

The survey will look for any non-Water Regulations Acceptance Scheme approved accessories, assess your cool water tank and types of conditions in your hot water cyndrical tube and accessibility to all areas that require monitoring and also maintenance by law.

Following the assessment, you will get a full report that can include any assistance with remedial work and repairs and methods you should take next.
