Why do a loft conversion?
A loft conversion can add a lot of money – up to 20% – to the worth of home. Many families choose to convert their loft area as a method of needing extra space without having to endure the costly and stressful procedure for moving home. Work going on from the loft can even be less disruptive than, say, a serious extension with an existing living area.
But take care not to outgrow your road. Should you invest too much and extend much you’re unlikely to view coming back in your investment.
Is my loft a useable space?
You’ll want to start by assessing whether houses roof space is suitable for a loft conversion. Nearly all are, but you’ll find three main things to check:
Internal height. Measure in the the top ceiling joist to underneath the ridgeboard from the apex. It must measure 2,500mm to suitably convert.
Roof pitch. Measure the angle of the roof. The greater the pitch angle, the better the central head height might be.
Footprint. At the very least general guideline, internal rules should measure 5,500mm lateral, including chimney, and seven,500mm all-around.
How I prefer the loft space?
Once you’ve roughly established your house is suitable for a loft conversion, think of how you would want to apply it; perhaps a supplementary bedroom with en-suite bathroom, as well as a den or playroom for your growing children. Think about a place to unwind or study from the other family?
Or maybe it’s a multi-purpose room with a mix of uses, for example extra living space which doubles as guest accommodation. If you are intending to incorporate your bathrooms, should it be a shower room or could there be space to add a bath? If you are thinking of organising a bathroom inside a loft, remember to leave a good amount of headroom.
Also believe about storage, as built-in space is often included, especially in the eaves.
When examining the floor plan don’t overestimate the room you’ll get. You may have angled ceilings which restrict movement as well as the sort of furniture you could have. By necessity most domestic loft conversions offer useable space of cosy dimensions, best suited to sleeping, play or a workplace.
